HEDGE MAINTENANCE for BROWN HAIRSTREAK BUTTERFLY

On the best day of the week Neil Doyle and his merry gang of volunteers turned up at the café end to help us coppicing self-seeded blackthorn bushes along a quarter to a third length of the Mill Road hedge under the expert guidance of Jamie Burston of the Sussex Butterfly conservation. The aim was to cut down these bushes and allow for new growth to encourage brown hairstreak butterflies to lay their eggs on, which is their preferred laying habitat. Indeed one egg was observed on one of the bushes,  indicating that this particular rare and elusive species has already found the Ridge and likes it!!  With the help of Jamie’s magnifier everybody had a good look at the egg, which, to the naked eye, is just a white speck, the size of a small pinhead.
The work party consisted of a good number of volunteers and some KTRG members and around 20 people, including members of TWEAK and Westdene Barn soon made light work of the task. Coats were shed before long in the glorious sunshine and a half-way through breather was enjoyed by all with Neil Doyle providing coffee and tea.
Many thanks to all, it is very much appreciated and it is good to know that the new Brighton and Hove Volunteer group and Brighton & Hove Green Spaces Forum is up and running and working!!
